Severn Restoration Plan – Our plan to stop the flow of sediment and nitrogen into the Severn is gaining traction. Septic systems are being up-graded, and we have been granted $450,000 to restore Clements Creek with an additional $925,000 being considered. Saltworks Creek is next, then up to the headwaters. "Millions are being spent to create new oyster beds and plant oysters in the Severn River, but they are being suffocated and killed by stormwater runoff every time it rains. Their only hope for survival is the Severn Riverkeeper Restoration Program. It began with the $450,000 Clements Creek Restoration Project, thanks to the President's Stimulus Funding," said Severn Riverkeeper Fred Kelly.

Last October, Severn Riverkeeper Fred Kelly thanked Senator Cardin at Sandy Point State Park for the $450,000 from the President's Stimulus Package that jump started our $2 Million Severn River Restoration Program. We also took the opportunity to show the Senator our list of restoration projects yet to be funded and how they would improve water quality. Senator Cardin was holding a press conference on the Chesapeake Clean Water and Ecosystem Restoration Act, a bill he introduced. It will provide $1.5 Billion for Bay Restoration. Fred was invited because he has been asking the Maryland Delegation to ensure that Bay Restoration Funds be used for restoration and not additional studies. We offered the Senator the opportunity to join us on the river and see how our restoration projects succeed and why previous efforts have failed.

The Importance of Legal Action to Save the Bay

The "Chicken War" article in the fall issue of Chesapeake Life Magazine reminds us of the importance of legal action in protecting the Severn and the Bay. | Read the article.

Reference is made to Severn Riverkeeper, Fred Kelly’s, successful fight to save the most important striped bass spawning area in the Chesapeake Bay. He stopped certain destruction of this critical area by PEPCO’s proposed nuclear power plant at Douglas Point on the Potomac River. The godfather of estuarine science, Dr. Eugene Cronin, called it the most important legal action ever taken on behalf of the Bay.

Fred expresses the critical role of Riverkeepers and why your support of our advocacy on behalf of the Severn River is so vital: “True environmental protection only comes from lawsuits, where an impartial judge looks at the action being taken by the polluter and says, “You’re in violation of the law. You have to stop.” Reliance on voluntary compliance had doomed the Bay to certain destruction prior to the emergence of the Chesapeake Riverkeepers as a powerful force.
